Schleicher Sprachservice celebrated its 20th anniversary earlier this year, which is why I started thinking about what we have achieved during all this time.
No question about our job being highly interesting. Specialising in Legal & Finance, we cover a broad range of topics. The day I’m writing this text on is typical: it started with an extract from the commercial register, which had to be translated into English and certified by the Frankfurt Regional Court. Then there was a video interpreting appointment concerning a legal dispute about IP law, and, at the end of the day, I had to prepare for an interpreting job on the enforceability of bank guarantees that’s coming up next week.Schleicher Sprachservice celebrated its 20th anniversary earlier this year, which is why I started thinking about what we have achieved during all this time.
But sometimes, you can’t help feeling that not all of this really makes any sense. For example, sitting all day in an interpreting appointment where everyone knows from the start that the other side isn’t going to budge, or having to translate a gigantic English SPA into German because the authorities insist that German is the official language, even though really everything that was said and written between the parties was in English….
That’s why it’s good that there’s one thing in our lives that definitely makes sense: our January donation. For 20 years now, 10% of our January turnover has always gone to a good cause. Incidentally, we chose the month of January because we thought that business would be slow at the beginning of the year. Then, however, a customer came along who brought us extremely high sales figures in January, which we were always happy to put into the projects. Since Covid-19, that has no longer been the case, and January is now another rather slow month in terms of sales.
By the way – 2026 will be an exception as we will be on holiday for the first two weeks of January, which is why we have decided to shift our donation month to February next year.
