Which kinds of interpreting are there?

Depending on the setting, there are many different solutions for interpreting assignments:

In simultaneous interpreting, the spoken word is translated at the same time as it is spoken. For this, usually two interpreters sit in an interpreter’s booth and speak into a microphone in turns. Their translation is then sent to headphones without delay, so listeners can understand everything immediately. This solution is usually used for large events, such as at the European Parliament.

In consecutive interpreting, the person to be translated first says a couple sentences; while this is happening, the interpreter usually takes notes. Then, the speaker stops talking for a bit so the interpreter can translate what they said. This way, large portions of language can be transmitted easily with only a short delay.

For groups of up to 15 people, a tour guide system might be the way to go. In this case, the interpreter speaks into a microphone and the listeners receive the interpretation into their headphones.

In smaller gatherings, the good old conversation or whisper interpretation may be the right solution. Here, the interpreter whispers their tranlsation into one person’s ear, keeping them up to speed.
